Lois Hornbostel

Lois teaches all levels of mountain dulcimer playing. She is the author of 8 books on the subject published internationally by Mel Bay Publications. She has taught over 19,000 youngsters the basics of mountain dulcimer playing in arts residencies at schools throughout the country, and since 1987 has organized dulcimer events both for state universities, the Swannanoa Gathering, and DULCIMRVILLE in Black Mountain, NC, held the first week of June. Lois’s first recording, “Vive le Dulcimer,” was a finalist for an “Indie” Award in the World Music category. She has won dulcimer playing competitions at the Galax, VA, Fiddlers Grove, NC, Mt. Airy, NC, and Dublin, VA old-time fiddle conventions, has produced more recordings of dulcimer music and was featured on Volume I or “Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer” and “Masters Christmas” albums. Lois is the editor of Mel Bay’s www.DulcimerSessions.com webzine, a teaching website featuring techniques and music styles of music for the mountain dulcimer. Her repertoire includes Southern Appalachian, Irish, Old-Time, Cajun, and World Music.
