He wrote some 400 compositions, 250 of which have been published. "Unter dem Doppeladler" (Under the Double Eagle) opus 19 is perhaps his best known composition. The title of this immortal march refers to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian double monarchy. The march became so popular that it was recorded by the Sousa-band 3 times before J.F.Wagner died at the age of 52. It became the official regimental march of the 1st Austrian Artillery Regiment Number 2. In the 1950's, it became a popular bluegrass standard, and was recorded by such legendary guitar pickers as Chet Atkins and Doc Watson.
