Ruth Barrett - voice, fretted dulcimer, bodran
Ruth BarrettRuth Barrett is an internationally known fretted dulcimer recording artist, singer, and songwriter and award winning recording artist. Her numerous recordings beginning in 1980 have featured Ruth’s classical finger picking style of dulcimer playing, combined with a powerful and beautiful voice, has enchanted audiences for over three decades. She is known for her original folk music inspired by folklore, mythology, the celebration of nature, and her arrangements of traditional Celtic and English folk music. Ruth’s musical collaboration with dulcimer player Cyntia Smith produced six critically acclaimed recordings beginning in 1981. Ruth’s 1990 solo release, Parthenogenesis, won an INDIE award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors in the category of Women’s Music. In 2002, Ruth’s original composition, Romp of the Canyon Kitties, was released as the opening track on Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer, Volume II (2003). Ruth’s latest CD, Songs of the Otherworld was released in early 2011. Ruth was the 2011 recipient of the Jane Schliessman Award for outstanding contributions to women’s music from Women in the Arts. For over forty years, Ruth’s accessible and supportive teaching style, plus her enthusiasm, has successfully taught thousands of people to play the fretted dulcimer, from private instruction to national folk festivals and music retreats including String A-Long, the Swannanoa Gathering, the Harvest Festival of Dulcimers, and the Winter Festival of Acoustic Music. She taught private and group dulcimer lessons for over a decade at the famous McCabes Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California before relocating to the Midwest where she has taught through University of Wisconsin’s Continuing Education.
