A festival consists of workshops, vendors, and concerts over a period of two or more days. This is an event where you expect to have participants from outside your local region.
Cumberland Gap Dulcimer GatheringDate(s): 5/9 to 5/11 2008 Second Annual Gathering. A laid back gathering for all who wish to jam and share tunes. There will be a few classes for those who wish. Blue River Folk Music FestivalDate(s): 5/16 to 5/17 2008 The 2008 Blue River Folk Music Festival will be held on Saturday, May 17. Classes will be offered in hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, mandolin, shape-note singing, and banjo. The complete workshop schedule and registration form are available at the festival's website: www.blueriverfolkfest.com. Our performers/instructors include Larry Conger, Les Gustafson-Zook, and Cathy Barton & Dave Para. Martha Richard, Myra Dworski and Jon Hall will also be presenting workshops.
All festival events will be held at Town and Country Christian Church in Shelbyville. The church is air-conditioned and handicapped accessible. Workshops begin at 9:00 AM, and the evening concert will start at 6:30 PM. There is a welcome party/jam session at the church on Friday evening from 7:00-9:00 PM.

Folk College with Simple GiftsDate(s): 5/23 to 5/25 2008 Folk College with Simple Gifts is a fun, hands-on weekend of workshops, concerts, jams, dancing, and friendship held at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA. All ages, instruments, and levels are welcome. The event is designed for musicians with eclectic tastes. Within one weekend, you'll have a choice of workshops ranging from old-time to Celtic to international, and you'll get to sing, dance, play, and listen. It takes place Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25, 2008.
Performers for 2007 include Hickory Project (bluegrass), Scott Ainslie (blues guitar), The Wiyos (vaudeville and ragtime), Galitcha (East Indian), Elke Baker (Scottish and Cape Breton fiddle), Liz Donaldson, (contra, English, Scottish tunes), Doofus (old time), Natalia Esquivel-Benitez (Latin American tunes), Laurie Hart (French Canadian & Swedish fiddle), Gordon Bonnet (Balkan and Breton tunes), Clark Parry & Cindy Durkee (beginners track, all instruments), and Simple Gifts (the hosts for the weekend and multi-talented instrumentalists.)

6th Best Ever Pig's Ear Kentish Horse Folk AleDate(s): 5/30 to 6/1 2008 This is a small, friendly festival of music, song & dance (mostly from the British Isles) that is run in the tradition of the 'Folk Ales' of the county of Kent. It celebrates local beers and local music and features mostly local artists who play in the folk clubs and pubs of South East England. We hope you find much to enjoy in the varied programme of performers (32 different acts in 2007) who come together in this attractive corner of the Garden of England to sing, play, drink and generally enjoy themselves. Chattanooga Dulcimer FestivalDate(s): 6/20 to 6/22 2008 The workshops at this festival focus on technique, more than tunes. Classes available for both hammered and mountain dulcimers - beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Workshops all day Friday and Saturday. Concerts Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday morning activities and afternoon outdoor jam at the Tennessee Aquarium.

Afternoons present 6 1/4 hr. courses mainly on repertoire that allow you to study with another teacher of your choice.
Mid-day communal meetings have close-up staff performances.
Evenings offer parties, great jam sessions (slow or moderate), a staff concert, a students� open mike, enrichment guest performers, the �Old Farmer�s Ball� at Warren Wilson College (featuring the �Dulcimer All-Stars� - our week�s staff!).

*7th Annual* Laurel Highlands Hammered Dulcimer Workshop. Three-day HD workshops for beginner/intermediate and intermediate advanced. Saturday evening will include a traditional Appalachian Music concert. Brett and Serenity Ridgeway and Dave and Sue Gilchrist will perform featuring the hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, acoustic guitar, mandolin, bluegrass banjo, and marimbula.

Topics covered: Chord progressions, rhythm techniques, nifty rag licks, and hammering techniques such as rolls, triplets, flams, arranging and developing your own songs using harmony, grace notes, and arpeggios, scales, using chromatics to add flair to your playing as well as learning a few tunes.
