2009-2010 Schedule

All of our meetings are free to attend except for two special events per year as noted below.

September 13: Pete Seeger Day – Pete Seeger turned 90 years old in 2009. What better way to celebrate this folk music legend than by playing the music that has kept him 90 years young.

October 11: Repertoire Round-up – Many members have asked for a time when we can re-visit some of the tunes we’ve enjoyed at past meetings with the goal of creating a shared club repertoire. Depending on the interests of attendees and how a piece grabs us, we may simply enjoy playing through it a few times or decide to dig into it and work on polishing our arrangement. We’ll let the spirit of the afternoon guide us.

November 8: Ken Kolodner Workshop & Mini Concert – Highly sought after ensemble member and virtuoso on hammer dulcimer and fiddle, Ken has developed this workshop especially to help players of mountain dulcimers, hammer dulcimers, fiddles and other acoustic instruments make more beautiful music together by exploring phrasing, dynamics, tempo and texture changes, back-up ideas and more. Special event fee is $20 for members, $25 for guests.

There will be no December meeting.
Enjoy the holidays.
See you in 2010!

January 10: Composers & Arrangers Wanted – Now is the time to share your originality. If you have a tune or song you have created or arranged, bring it to this meeting. Janet Swartz and Stephen Van Houten will lead and each share one of their particularly successful arrangements. Please bring at least 10-12 copies of music to share.

February 21: Early Music for Recorders & Dulcimers – We had so much fun last year with the Park Ridge Recorder Society that we’ve invited them back. We’ll fill the room with a gorgeous blend of sound as we play music from the Renais-sance, Elizabethan, and other early music eras.

March 14: Sneak Preview – Carole Ehrman is in the process of writing a book targeted to mountain and hammer dulcimer players who want to make music with each other and with players of other acoustic instruments. We’ll get to preview and test drive her work. Heidi James assists as hammered dulcimer editor, advisor and educator. í

April 11: Aubrey Atwater Workshop & Mini Concert – Learn to add more interesting harmonies to your music and gently venture into improvisation. Jean Ritchie has been a dear friend and major inspiration to Aubrey. You’ll hear that in her entrancing arrangements. And no one brings more energy to her performances than this multi-instrumentalist, award winning vocalist and captivating clogger. Special event fee is $20 for members, $25 for guests.

May 2: Repertoire Round-up – See October meeting description.

1:30 p.m. Meeting room opens for instrument set-up and tuning.

2:00 p.m. Playing begins.

Players of all acoustic instruments are welcome. Sheet music, mountain dulcimer tab and chord designations are available so
music is accessible to all.
