September
11: Steve Eulberg Workshop & Mini Concert
-
A Grammy nomination, Opus and Winfield prizes have brought
well-deserved recognition to Steve, a highly skilled player of
mountain and hammer dulcimers, other string instruments and a
gifted songwriter and vocalist. He says, "Yes! Dulcimers can
play jazz and blues," and he'll teach a jazz and blues workshop
for dulcimers and other acoustic instruments at this meeting.
Visit Steve's websites,
OwlMtnMusic.com and
SteveEulberg.com.
Special event fee is $20 for members, $25 for guests.
October 9: Giving Back
- As a thank you to St. Augustine's Church, the generous
provider of our meeting space, we will be playing a few pieces
at their October 30 church service. At this meeting, everyone is
invited to enjoy learning these pieces, even if you are not
available to perform at the church.
November 13: I Got Rhythm...
I Got Changes - We will explore how to make basic I, IV and
V chords more interesting in our songs, first through rhythmic
variations, then, by substituting alternate chords. We'll work
through some old favorites and hope to spark your creativity.
There will be no
December meeting.
Enjoy the
holidays.
See you in 2012!
January 8: Waltz in the New Year - Neal
Walters' Cheat River Waltz includes parts for hammered and
mountain dulcimer, bass, autoharp, fiddle and guitar; a complete
folk orchestra. Listen to a sound clip at
www.cdbaby.com/cd/doofus2. As time permits, we'll enjoy
other waltzes, too. Visit
DoofusMusic.com for more about Neal and his band.
February 19: Early Music for
Recorders and Dulcimers - The fine instrumentalists of the
Park Ridge Recorder Society will join us for another afternoon
of ensemble playing. This has always been one of our most
popular gatherings. We will be learning Early Music from the
Renaissance and Baroque eras, so well suited to our combination
of instruments.
March 11: Fireside Book of
Folksongs - We will celebrate the Fireside Book of Folksongs
by playing classic folk song favorites popularized by this
iconic collection. These are the songs we learned from our
elders and in turn taught our children. So, come, play on our
"front porch," and let the music take you back to the good old
days.
April
15: Dona Benkert Workshop & Mini Concert - Popular teacher
of both mountain and hammered dulcimer at Chicago's Old Town
School of Folk Music, Dona will introduce us to the rich
tradition of Australian fiddle tunes. Dona is particularly
admired for her skill in making fiddle tunes come alive on both
dulcimers and in creating highly engaging arrangements for
dulcimers and other acoustic instruments.
Special event fee is $20 for members, $25 for guests.
May 6: Repertoire Round-up -
Our annual chance to re-visit the tunes we've enjoyed at past
meetings with the goal of creating a shared club repertoire.
Depending on the interests of attendees and how a piece grabs
us, we may simply enjoy playing through it a few times or decide
to dig into it and work on polishing our arrangement. We'll let
the spirit of the afternoon guide us.
