Another thread mentions a dulcimer on the ISS. What songs would an astronaut sing? I can think of two possiblities, Fly Me To The Moon, and Stairway to Heaven. What would you suggest?Smile Play on, FF

How about the old 60's instrumental Telstar. Or the Byrds song Eight Miles High. And Elton John had Rocket Man. Larry

Actually, the only group playing I do is with the Filk music people. These are science fiction fans who play music. A fun group--traditionally they play satirical songs with science fiction or space themes, though they actualy play a lot more than that. I enjoy them because they appreciate nuttiness and tolerate less-than-ideal musicianship. I can sing horrible songs like "Barfy the Seasick Hedgehog" as well as play my fake medieval dulcimer tunes. Anyway, within the nationwide Filk comunity, there are a lot of good songs about space themes, many to origianal tunes, some funny, some to existing melodies. And I'll be darned if I can think of a single one of them. My brother is much more involved in their community--I have just been showing up to his house sings for the last year. BY the way, it is said that filk began 40 or more yeas ago as a typo on some schedule that was supposed to be folk, but since they weren't quite really singing folk, the name stuck.

Folkfan, try reading "Bimbos of the Death Sun" by Sharyn McCrumb (yes, the same one who wrote the ballad novels). It is set at a sci fi con, and talks about filk singing. It is hilarious.

Yeah, I just got it about a month ago. Love it! I have the Rowan Stave too. I also got Sweetwater's CD of funny songs. My son loves the song "5 Constipated Men"; he has to play it for eneryone he gets in the car. He laughs so hard I'm afraid to let him drive!

There's a beautiful tune from the ''Star Trek - The Next Generation'' episode, ''Inner Light'' which returned in a later episode, as well. A space probe controls Picard's mind for 20 minutes, and in that time he lives an entire life on a planet which was destroyed 1500 years earlier. In that life, he's a musician and plays a tune on a whistle. In a later episode he plays it with a lady who accompanies it on a roll-up piano. I've worked up the tune, and call it ''Folk Melody from Ghitan''. It's gorgeous, but I wonder what the copyright ramifications are about sharing it? I'd be glad to do so on an individual basis, but I'd hate to get anyone in trouble by posting it.

Hey Steve, thanks for sharing that. I hope we can have access to that tune and that nobody gets into trouble. What you said made me think about a theme which seems to run constantly through the various posts I read, something which might be callled the 4-S's. Ex-G.I.s can tune up, it's not what you're thinking. That theme, which appears in whole or in part in so many posts is, 'Song, Story, Service and Sharing.' Not a bad mantra for a great group of folks. I have come to appreciate all of you very, very much. thanks. Cowboy John

Steve, I know both of the episodes that you mentioned. I loved the one where the captain spend an entire lifetime while in a trance on the deck of the control room. It was neat seeing Picard interreact with children and finally learn to play his whistle. If at first, etc. Thanks for letting us know that you've worked out the song from Ghitan. Perhaps I'll get it from you one day. Keigh
