New Videos from Mark Gilston

Postby Tradman » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:28 pm

A new year warrants a new thread, so here are my new videos for 2012:

I'm back home from a wonderful week-end teaching at Kentucky Music Winter
Week-End where I got to spend time with old friends and got to make new
ones.

I'm starting off the year with an old traditional Irish tune
best known for being the tune to the old cowboy song, Streets of Laredo.

This week's video is a beautiful Swedish polonaise. I first heard this tune on a CD about 5 years ago, and instantly fell in love with it. It took another 3 years before I rediscovered the tune and realized that I could play it on dulcimer.

This week's video is a Mark Gilston original (-: It's a piece I wrote in Old Time style specifically to help teach cross-picking on the dulcimer.

This week's video is one of those cool eastern European tunes which I've always loved, but thought "This couldn't possibly work on mountain dulcimer." Then, one day, I tried playing it, and was astounded at how nicely it fell into place. It's great fun to play too!

This week's video is an old time banjo tune from Alabama. I'm playing a fiddler's version on my DAD McKinney.

When I was young, my mother worked from home and was always playing ethnic music on 78's and LPs. Among her favorites was the marvelous Israeli singer, Shoshana Damari. So I learned lots of beautiful Jewish tunes as a child. Later as a teenager I began international folkdancing, and many of those tunes I knew were used for dances.

When I was young, we had a collection of music boxes which i used to love to play. These days most of them are broken or gone, but they make for wonderful tunes on dulcimer. Here's a tune from one of my favorites: The spring on music box has gotten weak over time, but you can get the feel of the original:
