Postby David Wirtz » Fri Mar 30, 2012 8:52 am

Hello all,
Could anyone tell me where to get directions to make a music stand for a MD? I just bought my first instrument and would like to get started.
If there is anyone from the Platteville, Wisconsin area, please contact me.
Thanks so muc,
David

Got a chair going begging? Sit, MD across knees, and awa' ye go.
If you want to get fancy, put a towel under it to stop it slipping.
If you want to get real fancy, find some ply big enough to go under it, nail a couple of half-inch strips to it and rest the MD on that: the extra clearance gives the back greater resonance and strongly boost volume. Look under "possum board" for what's what there.
You'd no more use a stand for a guitar, now, would you, unless it's a slide hawaiian or dobro. If you really must, do something like they do, or use one of the fold-down keyboard stands. There are even MD players who play it like a zither across the chest, almost like a guitar.

David,

Do you mean a stand to hold music as you play, not the instrument itself? I don't have plans or know where there are any, but it should be pretty simple. Most regular music stands would work. Some have deeper shelves than others and are, therefore, better suited for holding a binder or book of music than others. A lot of people use a stand like Lee Felt (The Dulcimer Bag Lady) sells at this link. Others sell or make smiilar stands, so you might check various vendors of dulcimer items. I hope that helps.

One other thing, you might consider posting questions like this in the "Mountain Dulcimer Beginners' Area" section of this board. A lot more people visit that area than the Marketplace so you would have better luck getting answers.

Welcome to Everything Dulcimer. Look around and feel free to ask questions or contribute whatever you can.

Just Google "Dulcimer Music Stand" and check the links out. There are several on the web.

Here is a good one too. I have seen these stands and they are well made. Good luck.

Wait, am I missing something? Why do you need to build a music stand before you can start playing dulcimer?

1. A folding metal stand costs about 12 bucks at any music store. Looks ugly but works just fine.

2. You can't prop music on a table or chair? (Admittedly, I have duct-taped music to the back of the person standing in front of me, but only under duress :D )

I can see why you might want to build your own nice wooden stand, but that's a project completely separate from learning to play the dulcimer. Any stand that adjusts to the right height will do; there's nothing special about a music stand for dulcimers. Google "plans build music stand" and good luck. Some of these are lovely: http://www.musicstandshop.com/music_stand_plans.php

Clip-on tab holders are very handy. Try prussiavalley.com or windyriver.org.

Here's another good one. You can buy direct, or also from Gary Sager at Prussia Valley.
