Sister, check the free tab posted here at ED. There may be some, like Silent Night, that your children would enjoy.

The Tab Book

"A Dulcimer Christams" by Bud and Donna Ford
this is a Mel Bay Book

I use this book with most of my beginers, most songs are in the Ionian Mode, a couple in the Aoelian Mode.

PublicDomain Dulcimer group

Postby LarryHicks » Sun Oct 08, 2006 8:13 pm

There is a Yahoo group called publicdomaindulcimer, which has files of public domain songs to download. You will need to join the group to get access, but they have a good list of Christmas songs in DAd as well as hymns ond other stuff.

There should be a sign up button near the upper left of the page that comes up with the link above.

Enjoy,
Larry

I went back to look at the tabs, and some could be used by beginners by just playing the melody on the d string(s), while others require fingerpicking, or finding melody notes on the other strings.

Here's a link to the Everything Dulcimer tab index.

I know I've seen a lot of Christmas music there, including Silent Night. :)

"O Come, Little Children" is a good Christmas hymn for children, and I do that in DAdd. A sample of that is posted on DulciTunes, in case you'd like to hear it. This is a public domain song, too.

Sister, there's also an article here on ED about translating standard notation into MD tab. http://www.everythingdulcimer.com/artic ... _workshop/
I've used that more than once to pick up tunes that I can't find elsewhere. I think "On Eagle's Wings" would be workable that way, and if it's possible, they could play it at mass. (That would be true of other Advent songs as well, that might not be as easily found elsewhere.)

Look for the Little Drummer Boy, It sounds really good on the dulcimer and it is very easy to play! I think Margret Wright has it in her 12 tune Christmass Book.
