Last week I got an old dulcimer that had been hanging on my brother's wall as a decoration. The bridge was missing and it needed new strings. I picked up a plastic guitar bridge and a file, strung it, and within an hour was playing Amazing Grace. What a great instrument. I am hooked on playing this thing and was wondering if there are any clubs or players in the toledo area. Thank you.

Hi Andy - Welcome to our fun world! I grew up in Toledo a few decades ago; haven't been back much since the late 60s. There is a large dulcimer group in Toledo, as i recall from somewhere, also in towns all around that area and up into Michigan. Ohio is a sort of Dulcimer Mecca; although most of the activity takes place south of Toledo... Check out the Clubs link on the first page of ED to see if the Toledo bunch is listed. There are lots of Buckeyes here who will surely know. Also dulcimer shops and festivals galore. Somewhere here, I think it was Woods, who compiled a list of where everyone is from. Read the how-to articles in the Articles section to get a bit more of an idea of what you've gotten yourself into <grin>. Got questions? Ask. We make up great answers. Never let anybody tell you that you MUST or HAVE TO play your dulcimer any way except the way you want to play it. The others will be chiming in any minute now with there welcomes too.

Gives you an idea of who is where. Some members are no longer active, and some just signed up but don't play either type of dulcimer. So it's just a take-it-for-what-it's-worth kind of thing. Andy - the answer is a resounding YES! If you get over towards Maumee and see a pickup with "Hulme Construction" painted on the side, stop and tell my brother "hi! He lives there and works all over N. OH & S. MI, doing renovation contracting jobs and window installations.

I live in southeast Michigan just over the Ohio line from Toledo. There is a club in the Toledo Area that calls themselves "The Toledo Dulcimer Club". They have other instruments besides dulcimers and do mostly singing to instrumental accompaniment. They meet Thursday evenings about 7:00 p.m., but I'm not sure where. The current president is Bob McCarthy. You can probably find a phone number in the Toledo phone book. I used to be more active in the club, but have other responsibilities that keep me occupied. However, I do teach appalachian dulcimer in my home, which is about 10 minutes north of Sylvania.
